Instead of being what you may think &8211; a &8220;holiday&8221; started by businesses in order to promote a product &8211; National Donut Day has been around since 1938. It actually began as program started by the Salvation Army. During World War I, Salvation Army volunteers gave out donuts to soldiers on the front lines. Slightly patriotic, mostly indulgent, National Donut Day is always celebrated the first Friday in June.

Online Investment Company Offers Free ‘Beginner’s Guide to Investing’

Online investment resource company Global Investment Institute is pleased to announce it is offering “ The Beginner’s Guide to Investing ” to anybody interested in learning about investing, for free on its site.
The sole aim of the Global Investment Institute, since its inception in 2005 has been to educate people about how to plan a solid financial future. They feature hundreds of informational articles, and regular newsletters to achieve their goal, and recently decided that they need a way to reach a bigger audience.
While many companies would choose the traditional publishing route to sell information to customers, Brock Hamilton, Editor of the Global Investment Institute went against the advice of staff and made the bold decision of giving the information away for free instead.
The “Beginner’s Guide to Investing” was initially conceived as a book. Hamilton says the original plan was to offer an online investment resource product that people could purchase to help them start making their financial plans. As the staff at Global Investment Institute worked towards that goal (they may still publish a print version at some stage down the road), they realized that traditional media simply wasn’t ‘big enough’ to hit a mass audience, without wasting millions in marketing costs.
